Rose Compass Medallion
A sixty-inch rose compass in walnut and maple, cut and fitted by hand from 214 pieces and set flush into a hard maple field.
The piece
Walnut points in a maple field
Eight long points between eight shorter, four cardinal letters, acanthus scrolls running off the diagonal, all ringed in dark stringing and set flush into a hard maple field. At standing height the walnut reads almost black against the maple, and that contrast is what keeps the points legible from the far side of the room.

Detail
Acanthus scrolls off the diagonal
Close in, the marquetry scrolls run off the diagonals between the points, walnut against maple, with the dark stringing ring beyond them. Maple is close-grained enough to hold a crisp edge, which is what keeps the scrolls sharp from across the room.

Send the room, the rough diameter you have in mind and any image that shows the look you want. The drawing comes first, then the estimate.
